Bomb
Most early bomb recipes were created by alchemists in an attempt to create the philosopher's stone. The earliest known recipe for a bomb comes from the 13th century Chinese text The Secret of the Golden Flower. This recipe calls for a mixture of saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal.
The first recorded use of a bomb was in 1221 by the Chinese during the siege of Qocho. Bombs made of iron, porcelain, and paper were thrown from catapults at the city walls. The Mongols also used bombs during their invasion of Japan in 1274.
Bombs continued to be used in warfare throughout the 14th and 15th centuries. In 1413, the Hussites used gunpowder bombs during the Battle of Chotusitz. In 1494, the first recorded use of a naval bomb occurred when the Venetians used cannon-fired bombs against the Ottoman fleet in the Battle of Lepanto.
