Broth

As far back as history can tell, people have been making broth. Broth is a liquid made by cooking meat, vegetables, or other ingredients in water. It’s a staple in many cuisines and has a long history of being used for both cooking and medicinal purposes.

The first recorded mention of broth dates back to the Old Testament. In the book of Leviticus, God tells Moses to instruct the Israelites to make a broth with lamb, onions, and garlic. This broth was likely used as a flavor enhancer for other dishes, as well as a way to make a simple meal more filling.

Broth continued to be a popular ingredient throughout the Middle Ages. Cooks often made it using leftover bones and scraps of meat, which they would then flavor with herbs and vegetables. This helped to stretch the meat and make it go further.
