Calzone
A calzone is a turnover made with pizza dough and typically stuffed with meats, cheeses, and vegetables. They can be either baked or fried. Calzones were first mentioned in a cookbook from Naples in the 18th century. It is thought that they were originally made as a way to use up leftover pizza dough and toppings.
Calzones became popular in the United States in the mid-20th century. By the 1970s, most pizza places in the United States offered calzones on their menus. In recent years, there has been a trend of gourmet calzones with creative fillings.
