A chocolate recipe is a list of ingredients that are combined to make a chocolate dish. The earliest chocolate recipe that has been discovered is from the Mesoamerican region and dates back to around 1900 BCE.

TheOlmecs, who lived in the region that is now southern Mexico, are thought to be the first to cultivate cacao plants. Cacao beans were used as currency and were also ground into a paste that was used in religious ceremonies. The Mayans and Aztecs, who also lived in Mesoamerica, continued the tradition of using cacao in religious rituals. They also began to make a drink called xocolatl, which was a combination of cacao, water, chili peppers, and other spices.

The first chocolate recipe that was written down was created by Hernando Cortés, a Spanish conquistador. Cortés discovered chocolate while he was in Mexico and brought it back to Spain in 1528. He gave the recipe for xocolatl to a Spanish monk, who then created a chocolate drink that was much sweeter than the original.
