Cooler

Most people think of coolers as refreshing, fruity drinks made with vodka, rum, or other spirits. But the history of the cooler goes back much further than that.

The first recorded recipe for a cooler can be found in an 1869 issue of The Boston Cooking School Magazine of Culinary Science and Domestic Economics. The recipe, for a “Gin and Water Cooler,” is a simple mixture of gin, water, and ice.

Over the next few decades, coolers evolved into more complex concoctions, often made with fruit juices, soda water, and different types of alcohol. By the early 1900s, coolers were a popular summertime drink, perfect for sipping on a hot day.
