Cream cake

Cream cakes have been around for centuries and their recipes have been passed down through generations. The earliest known recipe for a cream cake dates back to the 16th century, when cream was first introduced to the British Isles. This early recipe called for a pound of cream, two pounds of sugar, and a pound of flour, which were all mixed together and baked in an oven.

The first cream cake recipes were actually more like custards or pudding, and it wasn’t until the 18th century that the modern cream cake as we know it began to take shape. It was during this time that cake flour and baking powder were invented, which made it possible to create a lighter, fluffier cake. The first recorded recipe for a sponge cake, which is the type of cake most often used for cream cakes, was published in 1796.

The first cream cake recipe to include icing was published in 1803, and it called for a mixture of sugar, egg whites, and cream of tartar. This early icing was spread on top of the cake, and it wasn’t until the mid-19th century that the first recipe for a frosting made with butter and sugar was created.
