Fried eggs are a delicious and versatile breakfast food, but they didn’t always enjoy the popularity they do today. In fact, the history of fried egg recipes is a bit of a mystery.
It’s believed that fried eggs were first popularized in the Middle East, where they were known as “eggs in hell.” From there, they spread to Europe, where they became a staple of Spanish and Italian cuisine.
Fried eggs didn’t become popular in America until the late 19th century, when they were introduced by German and Austrian immigrants. Egg dishes were initially seen as foreign and exotic, but they soon became a breakfast staple.
