Kiev

Kiev is the capital and most populous city of Ukraine. It is in north-central Ukraine along the Dnieper River. The population in July 2015 was 2,887,974. Kiev is an important industrial, scientific, educational and cultural center of Eastern Europe. It is home to many high-tech industries, higher education institutions and historical landmarks. The city has an extensive system of public transportation and infrastructure, including the Kiev Metro.

The city was founded by the Varangians in the mid-9th century as a trading post on the Slavic route between Scandinavia and Constantinople. It acquired the name of Kiev, meaning "belonging to Kyi", a legendary Slavic chieftain. The townspeople called the town Kyiv and themselves Kyivites. The townspeople began to call themselves Kievans or Kievan Rus'ians after the Kyivan Prince Vladimir I Monomakh (r. 1113–1125), who ruled the principality of Kiev during the height of its power in the 11th–12th centuries.

The golden age of Kiev began with the reign of Vladimir the Great (980–1015), who turned the city into a capital of the first Slavic state,
