Lemon

Lemon recipes have been around for centuries, with the earliest known recipes dating back to the Middle Ages. At that time, lemons were used primarily for medicinal purposes, such as treating colds and coughs. It wasn't until the Renaissance that lemon recipes began to appear in cookbooks.

One of the most popular early lemon recipes was for a lemon cordial, which was made by steeping lemon peel in alcohol. This cordial was thought to have health benefits and was used as a remedy for a number of ailments.

Lemonade was also a popular early recipe, and it is thought that the first ever recipe for this refreshing drink was published in 1676. This early recipe called for lemon juice, water and sugar to be mixed together and then left to stand for six hours before being drunk.
