Liqueur

Liqueurs are created by adding distilled spirits to a base of sugar and flavorings. This category of drinks originated in the Middle Ages, when herbalists and apothecaries would combine extracts and distillates with sugar to make medicinal tinctures. Many liqueurs were originally conceived as curative elixirs and were thought to possess medicinal properties.

The earliest liqueurs were made with only a few ingredients, but as the popularity of these drinks grew, so did the number of flavorings that were used. Liqueurs can now be made with almost any combination of fruits, herbs, spices, and even nuts and seeds.

The word “liqueur” comes from the Latin “liquifacere,” which means “to dissolve.” This refers to the fact that liqueurs are typically made by dissolving flavored extracts and distillates into a neutral spirit. Liqueurs are typically sweetened, but they can also be made unsweetened (or “dry”).
