Loaf

Bread has been a staple food in human diets for thousands of years. The earliest evidence of bread-making comes from ancient Egypt, where archaeologists have found evidence of baking in the form of stone hearths and bakeware dating back around 10,000 years ago. The first recipes for leavened bread date back to around the same time, and it is thought that the Egyptians were the first to develop a method for leavening bread using yeast.

Bread-making soon spread to other parts of the world, with the Greeks and Romans both developing their own versions of the food. In the Middle Ages, bread was often made at home by women known as "bakers' wives". Commercial bakeries only began to appear in Europe in the 12th century, and by the 14th century, they were a common sight in towns and cities across the continent.

The recipes for breads and other baked goods have evolved over the centuries in response to changes in technology and ingredients. In the early days of baking, flour was often coarse and made from grains other than wheat. This made the breads darker and denser than the lighter, fluffier versions we know today.
