A recipe is a set of instructions for making a dish, and is usually written down so that it can be followed easily. Recipes have been around since ancient times, and the first known recipes were for food, not for making drugs or cosmetics. The word recipe comes from the Latin word for "take" (recipere), which means to take or receive.

The first known recipes were written by the Sumerians, who lived in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) around 4,000 BC. These recipes were inscribed on clay tablets, and were mainly for making bread and beer. The ancient Egyptians also had recipes, many of which have been found in the tomb of King Tutankhamun.

The first cookbook was written in Greece in the 1st century AD. It was called De re coquinaria, and was written by a Roman called Apicius. This book contained over 500 recipes, including dishes such as roast pork, oysters in vinegar, and rabbit stewed in wine.
