Mojito

One of the most popular drinks in the world, the Mojito, has a long and storied history. The earliest known recipe for a drink similar to the Mojito can be found in a 1586 Cuban cookbook. This recipe, however, did not include mint, which is now a key ingredient in the drink.

The first recorded mention of the Mojito was in a 1614 Spanish book called El Libro de los Cocktails. This book included a recipe for a drink made with water, sugar, lime juice, and rum.

While the Mojito gained popularity in Cuba, it wasn’t until the early 20th century that the drink began to be known outside of the island. One of the first people to bring the Mojito to the United States was Ernest Hemingway, who was a frequent visitor to Cuba.

When making a mojito, it is important to use fresh ingredients. Start by muddling fresh mint leaves, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup in the bottom of a glass. Add a shot of white rum and fill the glass with ice. Top off with a splash of club soda, and garnish with an extra lime wedge and mint sprig. To make the perfect mojito, make sure not to over muddle the mint leaves, as too much muddling could make the drink bitter. Also, if you want a sweeter drink, add more simple syrup. Finally, serve with a straw so that you can enjoy the mint and lime flavors together.
