Negroni

A negroni is an Italian cocktail made of one part gin, one part vermouth rosso, and one part Campari, garnished with an orange peel. It is considered an apéritif.

The exact origins of the negroni are unknown, but it is generally agreed that it was invented in Florence, Italy, in 1919. The most popular theory is that it was created at Caffè Casoni, now Caffè Dante. Another theory is that it was invented by count Camillo Negroni, who asked his bartender friend, Fosco Scarselli, to strengthen his usual Americano cocktail by adding gin instead of soda water.

The negroni was popularised in the 1930s by Giuseppe Cipriani, founder of the famous Harry's Bar in Venice. Cipriani created the cocktail for a regular customer, Count Negroni, who had asked Cipriani to make his Americano a little bit stronger.
