Omelet

There are many recipes for omelets, but the dish is thought to have originated in France. The French word for omelet is "omelette," which likely comes from the Latin word for egg, "ovum."

Omelets first appeared in French cookbooks in the 18th century. The earliest known recipe for an omelet was published in 1789 by French chef Pierre-François de la Varenne. His recipe called for a mixture of eggs, cream, and butter, which was cooked in a pan over a fire.

De la Varenne's recipe was likely inspired by a similar Spanish dish called a tortilla. Tortillas were made with eggs, but they did not usually contain cream or butter.
