If you’re a fan of pizza, you know that the sauce is key. But what’s the history behind this important ingredient?
We can trace pizza sauce recipes back to the 18th century, when tomatoes were first brought to Europe from the New World. At first, tomatoes were primarily used as decoration, but eventually, people began to experiment with using them in cooking.
One of the earliest recorded pizza sauce recipes was created by Antonio Mattioli, a chef from Naples, Italy. His sauce was made with tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, and basil.
