Sausage roll
A sausage roll is a British savory pastry, typically made from sausage meat wrapped in hot water crust pastry, although there are vegetarian versions. They are sold fresh or frozen in supermarkets, convenience stores and bakeries, and can be cooked at home from scratch using sausage meat and ready-made pastry.
Sausage rolls are believed to have originated in Britain in the early 19th century. The first known recipe for a sausage roll was published in Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management in 1861, which included a recipe for "sausage rolls or cockie leekies".
Sausage rolls became popular in Australia in the early 20th century, and are now a staple of the Australian diet. They are commonly served as a snack or lunch, and are also a popular party food.
