Stroganoff

The dish we now know as stroganoff was once a humble peasant meal in Russia. The original dish was made with beef, mushrooms and onions, and was probably named after Alexander Stroganov, a Russian landowner and diplomat in the 19th century.

The dish became popular in the West in the early 20th century, when it was introduced by Russian émigrés. It was originally made with beef, but over time chicken and other meats have become popular substitutes.

There are now many different versions of the dish, with different ingredients and methods of preparation. But the basic principle remains the same: a delicious, hearty meal that is perfect for a winter’s day.
