Turkey sandwich
What’s a turkey sandwich without a little bit of history? The sandwich as we know it was invented in the 18th century by John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. However, the first recorded sandwich-like meal can be traced back to ancient times. The ancient Romans and Greeks ate a type of flatbread called placenta that was filled with a variety of meats, cheeses, and vegetables.
The modern turkey sandwich can be traced back to the late 19th century when turkey became a more popular protein in the United States. Around this time, recipes for sandwiches made with turkey began appearing in cookbooks. One of the earliest known recipes for a turkey sandwich appeared in Sarah Tyson Rorer’s 1886 cookbook, Mrs. Rorer’s New Cook Book. This recipe called for cooked turkey to be placed between slices of bread that had been spread with mayonnaise.
Over the years, turkey sandwiches have evolved to include a variety of different ingredients and toppings. However, the basic principle remains the same: a delicious combination of bread and turkey!
Advice
When making a turkey sandwich, be sure to use high-quality ingredients. Start with two slices of fresh, hearty bread like sourdough or ciabatta. Spread a generous layer of mayonnaise or mustard on one side of each slice of bread. Add a layer of thinly sliced deli-style turkey, a few slices of tomato, some lettuce, and maybe even some bacon for an extra crunch. Finally, top it off with your favorite cheese. For a little extra flavor, try adding a few dashes of your favorite hot sauce. Enjoy your delicious turkey sandwich!
