Wonton
A wonton is a type of dumpling commonly found in a number of Chinese cuisines. They are typically filled with a variety of ingredients including pork, shrimp, vegetables, and noodles. The dough for wontons is made from flour, water, and salt, and is wrapped around the filling in a triangular shape. Wontons are then boiled or fried and served with a dipping sauce.
The origins of wonton can be traced back to the Han Dynasty in China. The word “wonton” is actually a corruption of the Chinese characters for “harmony” and “cloud”. The name was likely given to the dish due to the fact that the shape of the wonton resembles a cloud.
Wontons were originally served as a soup dish, and the most common filling was ground pork. The wontons would be boiled in water and served in a broth flavored with ginger and green onions. Over time, different regions of China began to develop their own unique wonton recipes.
