Brussels sprout

It is believed that Brussels sprouts were first grown in the 13th century in what is now Belgium. At that time, they were known as "cabbage of Brussels" and were grown for their medicinal properties. It wasn't until the 16th century that they were grown as a food crop.

Brussels sprouts were introduced to the United States in the early 19th century by Belgian immigrants. They quickly became a popular vegetable, especially in the Northeastern states.

Recipes for Brussels sprouts have been around since the early 19th century. One of the first known recipes was published in an 1824 cookbook. It called for boiling the sprouts and serving them with melted butter.
