Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut is a German word meaning “sour herb” or “sour cabbage.” The dish is made by fermenting shredded cabbage with caraway seeds, juniper berries, and salt.

The word “sauerkraut” first appeared in print in 1770, but the dish has been around much longer. It is thought to have originated in China, and was later brought to Europe by Mongol invaders.

Sauerkraut became popular in Germany in the 18th century, and was often eaten with pork. It is still a popular dish in Germany today, and is also enjoyed in other parts of Europe, as well as the United States.
